BRIEFLY, IN PASSING

Life is certainly a nice place to visit but I'm indeed happy I don't have to live here...that is, not forever; I'm sure that most of my critics share this happiness. As I casually observe the various "pictures at an exhibition" which attest to our eternally "post-modernist" culture, I truly have to laugh. The trivial quirks and juvenile fancies which assume the status of originality and creativity are legion. The self-consumed rantings and morbid ravings which assume the status of genius are not only legion but legend. In our present time and place and culture, where intellectualism has been replaced by elitism (of course, this was always the case), and dreams are often the temporal dreamings from the "waist on down," I suppose that authentic art is in shorter supply and hence easier to misrepresent to a less demanding because distracted public.
By the Tears of Falstaff!, James Dean would be proud that his memory is still alive after more than fifty years (and my wife tells me that I drive too fast), and that everyone continues to "rebel" in support of that ephemeral but ever-popular and seductive "cause." If a Cause WERE to be found, I wonder if these rebels would know what to do with one...maybe something like decency, maturity, maybe even Art, would emerge. (I can still remember my adolescent days and the stories we shared about our sexual exploits...these were also legendary with a touch of art to them).
