Halls of the Dark Muse

Battle of wits: Feline vs Human

My cat absolutely hates his flea treatment, and he always seems to have a 6th sense instinct for knowing when I am coming to treat him. Normally he is a really friendly, affectionate cat who always likes to be around whenever there are people outside, and if I go out back to take some photos he will follow me all around the yard, so usually whenever I am outside for anything else, he appears, but when I go out to treat him for fleas, mysteriously he suddenly is no where in sight.

So today I was in the house and I could see him out through the screen door curled up sleeping, so I thought this would be a good time to treat him because he was off guard. I go over to get the flea stuff, which is in the house, so I haven't even attempted to step outside yet or done anything that could have disturbed him, yet I look over and he is suddenly awake and watching me and as I start to advance to the screen door he sits up and I know if I try to walk outside with the flea stuff in my mind he is going to know what I want and take off.

I walk away from the door and out of his sight and I am wearing a skirt and don't have any pockets, so I slip the flea stuff in the waist band of my skirt hoping it doesn't just slide out and fall to the floor, so it is out of sight and the cat won't see it than I go outside and try to act nonchalant, but when I walk up to him he runs off and goes on the deck and I know if I follow him he will take off and make himself impossible to find for the rest of the day, so I walk away and just try to wonder around acting like I am not at all interested in finding him and finally he starts to come down the deck stairs and I walk over to one of the chairs on the porch and just sit down.

Well he wants the attention, but is still suspicious so he starts to walk toward me but looks ready to bolt at any moment, and at first he just gets close enough to let me scratch his head, but not try to pick him up and I know if I stand up he is going to take off, so I just sit there trying to entice him closer.

I felt bad about tricking him, be he has really bad allergic reactions to fleas so he has to be treated for it, and eventually I get him to come close enough to let me pick him up and restrain him to treat him, and then as soon as I am done he takes off like a bat out of hell.

Cats are laziest animals in the world.

I consider them fortunate in that respect, lote-tree.

Your cat certainly seems prescient, Dark. How hilarious to look up from your nefarious plan to see him staring at you. A little unnerving, actually.

Good job. Pets don't realize what we do for them and their health. Sometimes i wonder how they would live two weeks on their own.

Haha yes even though my cat is a sweetheart, he can be very unerving at times, and he has these big green ghostly eyes, becasue he is a ferral, you can see the wildness in his gaze.

He is also the only cat I have known to hold a grudge. It is unsettiling the way he remembers things.

I'm down to three cats now and they are spoiled rotten. They are house cats however -- to close to the streets and too many dogs in the neighborhood --we have one dog currently as well and he comes when he feels like it. The cat come quicker when called. Highly annoying.

God, of my two cats one is a darling and the other is a little monster. My Oriental is incredibly destructive, he climbs and bites everything. You also can't leave the bathroom door open cause he turns the tap on. Really annoying, but I have a soft spot for exotic cats.

My American Short-Hair, though, is the easiest cat to handle in the world.

I hear you on that one, OrphanPip. I have a Siamese-well, he is part Siamese, as are they all, but somehow he seems to be more Siamese than the rest-who has opened doors. He has also clawed through my carpet down to the floor at the doorways to the bedrooms, which I keep closed for various reasons. And he bites. He actually looks crazy. His eyes are slightly crossed and he looks like he could go off on you at a moments notice, which he can. Once he was angry and he managed to wrap himself around my forearm, all the while digging in his claws and biting. I really felt, for a moment, what it must be like to encounter a jaguar or a tiger burning bright.

I have a cat that was feral as a kitten, Dark. It's about time to put flea stuff on her. We can do it, but it takes two.

You cat sounds like a real character, lol.

My cats have never been of the temperamental variety, they are not given to sudden schizophrenic acts of violence when you are in the middle of petting them LOL.

But Demeter will give you the cold shoulder if you do something he does not like and just avoid. Once he would not let me get near him for a whole month because I accidentally stepped on his paw when I was feeding them, because he came up behind me and I did not know he was there

My wife has a predilection for Siamese cats as she was brought up with one. As a result, our first cat was a very mad Siamese who had an eating disorder. She would try to eat anything, even trying to get cooking burgers from under the grill.

We managed to cure her by giving her as much rice and chicken as she could eat. She quickly became fed up with all that, but retained a mad streak, even in her much calmer old age. I often had the arms of a self-harmer.

Yes, Tips sleeps with me and he always comes up to me at night for a little pet before settling sown. I pet him for awhile, then he will, out of nowhere, seemingly, begin biting me. It always ends with me yelling at him and putting him off the bed.

On the other hand, I find it very engaging that when I go up the stairs he bounds up them beside me, talking all the way. He loves to run into the bathroom where he waits in the tub for me to turn the water on a little bit so he can get a drink.

Actually, we had a Siamese, too, when I was growing up, but I've always had tabbies as an adult. I am very fond of them. Tips, who has all the markings of a Sealpoint Siamese, has a mother who looks every inch a Blue Russian, and his father is probably a Maine Coon.

I have another cat, Dark Muse (I have several ) who reminds me a little bit of your Demeter. He has never gone a month of not forgiving me, but he is very haughty. Or he used to be. He is getting kind of old now, and he's asking to be petted more than he used to.

I think that's what I love about cats. They put up a good front, but they're such little individualists, and quite affectionate, too.
