The World Today

Rate this Entry
From Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse

Whoever wants to live and enjoy his life today must not be like you and me. Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

"And so," she began again, "Goethe has been dead a hundred years, and you're very fond of him, and you have a wonderful picture in your head of what he must of have looked like, and you have a right to, I suppose. But the artist who adores Goethe too, and makes a picture of him, has no right to do it, nor the professor either, nor anyone else--because you don't like it. You find it intolerable. You have to be insulting and leave the house. If you had sense, you would laugh at the artist and the professor--laugh and be done with it. If you were out of your senses, you'd smash the picture in their faces. But you're only a little baby, you run home and want to hang yourself. I've understood your story very well, Harry. It's a funny story. You make me laugh. But don't drink so fast. Burgundy should be sipped. Otherwise you'll get hot. But you have to be told everything--like a little baby."
    I liked that.

I'm enjoying the novel, but I've got some issues, which Ill bring out in the thread. For instance, I'm half way through and I've yet to see any instance of him being beastly. The worst thing he did was accidently insult that Professor's wife's paiinting of Goethe, and that hardly qualifies as part of a wolf nature.

Well not to get into it here hehe, I will wait untill you post in the discussion thread and then I can share my own personal thoughts upon that and what I think Hesse was truly attempting to convey in the whole Steppenwolf concept.

See now I come here, and I'm feeling guilty still for giving up on this. Maybe I'll give it one more go. I just can't seem to get into it.

You should not feel guilty, this book just may not be your cup of tea, which is perfectly fine.

I hate it when I just can't get through something that should be good. I had the same issue with "To the Lighthouse". I've never finished that either ;) I can't really pin the issue with first person for me, but I can't even read popular fiction titles written from the POV. You may be familiar with them since they're part of the whole vampire genera, but I can't even get through the Anna Strong series. It has all my favorites, but it's all written from the 1st person...

I have to admit that I am a bit of a fan of 1st pov and well I am huge fan of Poe and his writings and he useses it almost exclussively in his stories.
