They Come in the Spring

They Come in the Spring

Most people admire spring
for the bloom of its flowers
as they dance in green grass
to the chorus of bird song,
the sweet aroma in the air
after a warm spring rain,
while basking beneath the
comfort of the shining sun.

But beneath the sunny veneer
of frolicsome romance,
and idyllic thoughts of rejuvenation
there lurks another side
to the season which brings
so much joy.

There breeds, practically
unseen, by the millions,
creatures with no remorse
just awaiting for the moment
to attack enmasse when you least
expect it, to draw your blood
away to their content,
and by the time you discover
it is already too late.

If I do not jump in glee
for the coming of spring
you will have to pardon me
for you see instead I am being
eaten be the fleas.

Thank you, it was written on a whim in play, as I was suffering from my numerous flea bites, haha.
