Akira Kurosawa's Birthday

Rate this Entry
Today was Akira Kurosawa birthday. The legendary Japanese film Director. Google celebrated his birthday with a doodle on it's home page.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed some of his films. He was inspired by both East and the West. And West too was inspired by him. His influence was felt as far away as India with another legendary film director Satyajit Ray. And I love his films too.

Watched Ran last week, never saw it before, more of a fan now than I was before I watched it.

Bueno! But have you seen any of Satyajit Ray's films?

    Specfically the "The Apu Trilogy"?

Can't say that I have, in fact, I don't think I have ever heard of this director, I will however look him up, and try the apu trilogy, if given the chance, it's not easy getting a hold of anything besides Hollywood fare in this part of the world nowadays, which is sad.

For example, I really want to see Rashômen by Kurosawa, but just can't find it anywhere.

You might able to get it from your local library on the heading of "World Cinema"...well at least our library does this...but I am sure you able to find it online somewhere ;-)

Haven't seen Kurosawa's movies, but I did see 'Shatranj Ke Khiladi' of Satyajit Ray. For long I have been meaning to watch Pather Panchali, but his movies are so old, it's difficult to find movies of that era. And we don't have such libraries, like the way you have it there.

I've never watched anything by Kurosawa but he's on my list. I'm watching a fair amount of Japanese cinema at the moment.

Aimus, it's Rashomon and you can pick it up from amazon.co.uk for £4.99!

Madhuri I am shocked that one of India's best director's films are not readily available in India :-(

    Damn you Bollywood! ;-)

His movies were from the black and white era, I don't see such movies available in huge numbers. Not in popular demand, I guess. Maybe, if one goes to Calcutta, one may find his movies there easily. I once bought a Hindi movie of that time, and it turned out to be a bad print and the movie wasn't even complete.

No problemo Madhuri, Satyajit Ray like Akira Kurosawa, Stanly Kubrick they make different type of films than Hollywood and Bollywood.

I like watching movies, be it any language, any genre. And, now that you have mentioned their names I would search for their movies. Thanks.
