Ruminations

--sounds like a cow eating. Is that the word I'm looking for? not sure.

I've sat down three times to blog and didn't know what to say. So this is a blog on certain thoughts that have been rambling around in my head.

1. We went to Santa Cruz beach/boardwalk on Thursday. Let me tell you, the surfer dude stereotype isn't a stereotype. That came as a total surprise to me. Acquainances laughed in disbelief when I told them I didn't know that. Lol, it just proves what I knew all along. I'm seriously behind on the times!

2. This website is absolutely fantastic. Seriously, I go on every day for at least an hour. What strikes me most is, as I said on GrayFoxDown's blog, is that the principles and standards here are visibly different than those of the outside world. I was feeling really lonely as a bookish type until I found this site and suddenly, I wasn't the only bookish person on the planet. It was a major relief to find that I wasn't alone and there actually are people who think the way I do.

3. I bought five books at a bigger than usual book sale at the library and I'm thoroughly pleased with them. St. Augustine, Wilde, poems of Byron, Keats, and Shelly; Marlowe, and Proust. *smilies* They look good on my shelves.
My books are comforting, really. I haven't very many of them; about 275, and I've got everything from classics to religious works to fantasies to mysteries to drama to romances...you get the idea .

4. I have a strange effect on people. Last Friday at church some of us were stuffing envelopes with invitations to our conference (more on that in a minute) and I was sitting with a bundle of young adults a couple of years older than me. One of them is interning as a police officer (he's actually one of my Pastor's sons) and he was describing an event that happened. "We came across an old lady abandoned by her family and living in a boarded up house with her dog. There was crap (not sure if that's considered a swear word and am blushing typing it up ) everywhere --here he paused and looked at me, apologized, and finished --sorry, feces, everywhere....." (I felt like saying that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, lol.)
I'm a Christian, and pretty vocal about it, and that makes people uncomfortable. Thing is, if they say something that they're not sure if I disagree with or if it's a slip of the tongue they'll look at me closely to see if I flinch, so I have to keep a poker face. If I flinch, they'll back off because I'd (understandably) be thought holier-than-thou. It's hard because then, they don't trust me, thinking I'm out to convert them. I'm not; it's beyond me. All I can do is say what I believe and why but I'll only do that if asked or if we become friends. Anything else can get offensive.

5. ok, finally, my church is having a conference here in the states. The theme is faith and we'll be having several guest speakers. My church is a peewee church called Christ Bible Church located in San Leandro, California, and is pastored by Joseph Jacowitz and Owen Alford. If anyone would like to come or order tapes, lemme know. I won't be there, though, we'll be in Canada for a family reunion. Here's the link: http://christbiblechurch.org/2007_Conference_Flier.pdf

Thanks for reading, my friends.

Curious as to what mysteries you read. I generally prefer Private Eye stories of what's known as 'hard-boiled' as in Hammett, sometimes Chandler but have to be in a mood. Like Agatha Christie. I know you like Dorothy Sayers but I can't get past a first page--I have some of her in my anthologies and Saint magazines.

Language is a problem. One little slip and it's remembered forever. One of the older ladies at work cussed the other day (cranky member on the phone) and I heard about it for the next two three workdays (when she was off). I remember when gossip used to be fun now it's just banal and cruel.

Faith-- a wide area--saving faith, believing faith, little faith, false faith, healing faith-sounds like fun.

What an excellent list!!!! I'm so jealous! Only 275 books? Are you kidding me? You're 16 years old with 275 books! (I haven't the money to buy that many). Ah, I must try reading again...I miss it.

This website is a total addiction.

Faith is always a good theme. Does your church do Vacation Bible Study? Mine started today and it was insane! Over four hundred little anklebiters came.

I truly admire you for your firmness in your convictions, and I am also jealous of such a sizeable book-count! Wow! I liked the way that you described your feelings as to finding LitNet, etc. I can relate!

mtpspur ~ Yes, the mysteries I read are my belovedest DLS, Agatha Christie and the quintessential Sherlock Holmes. DLS isn't for everyone, it's true. ...............275 books is a lot for a teenager but I think I've read somewhere on this site about some members with 500+?

Dude, I'm a surfer girl, minus the surfing. Totally.

You're definitely not alone in the feeling that you've found a place here- I, too, am 'bookish'. I think I lived half my young life between the shelves of my schools' libraries. 275 books is impressive! You don't need to hide at all - you have your own personal library!

"Crap" is the first 'swear word' I was allowed, and it's truly not much of one. When I trip or something, and nearly say sh** around the general crowd, I try to change it into 'crap' - it's not exactly polite, but it's definitely more common and less crude than the others.

Are you the quiet sort? I am! And for the longest time people always watched what they said around me. I didn't pay it any mind - my friends knew me better. I actually always thought it was rather polite that some boys watched their language around me (even though with my friends I talk like a sailor, or a surfer, kid you not). People, however, are likely to be more skeptical of things they don't understand. If the subject being discussed were less serious, you should have quoted Shakespeare! We can't block out the world around us, we can't filter the words, especially not if we're striving to be open-minded people - the best we can do is watch our*selves*, so smile, and put them at ease. ^^

Faith, of any kind, is a beautiful, beautiful thing. Great theme choice! Wish I could come to the conference - way far away though! Take care, fairy child!
