my poem and thoughts

Rate this Entry
Shades of half-grown stories flitting through my mind
I am left breathless by the quick succession of ideas
What does it mean to be a writer?
To find fact in fiction and fiction in fact?
To travel the journey from beginning to end?
In earnest of more tales to come?
Writing a character isn't easy.
Why do people write?
It clutches your mind until you're finished,
But it's liberating, isn't it? To rise above reality and
Escape from its unrelenting grasp?

I wrote this poem and posted it in the Personal Poetry section and was entirely amazed at all the compliments posted there. Really wasn't expecting all that and am very much hoping to be inspired by another line.

Well, today is/was the Fourth of July. Happy Birthday, my dear young America, may your shadow never grow less! My church had a picnic at a local park. Unfortunately I didn't feel well and went home with my Dad early as he had to shower and go to work . He works too much. So, I'm home alone and my Mom and little sister are still at the picnic. My mom asked if I wanted her to come home but I told her I'll be fine. It's been good for me, too; for a long while I've wanted solitude to regroup after a very busy couple of months before going to camp and Canada later this month. After a while I find people tiring (no offense at all meant, it's just my personality as I am an introvert) and I need time alone. Does anyone else ever feel that way? I'd guess yes, because bookish types don't usually need people as much as non-bookish types.

My family will be driving up to British Columbia, Canada on the 28th of this month. I'm looking forward to the drive though it'll be very long. Guess why? You'll laugh. I've got lovely nice books and music to take with me. Books I'm taking will be the "Dr. Faustus" (bought that not too long ago) Tolkien's "Morgoth's Ring," poems and plays by Yeats (because of the prominent part he has here at the LitNet), stuff by Brian Froud (at the suggestion of Niamh! ) and I forgot what else. Music is the Pirates 1 soundtrack, the LOTR soundtracks, a Star Wars soundtrack, some Loreena McKennitt, Celtic Woman, Mairead Nesbitt, Michael Buble, Frank Sinatra, Hayley Westenra, and I forgot what else. 24 more days! sigh......Not only that though; my sister and I will be going to camp on the 24th, right before we go to Canada. I'll be volunteering, and my sister will be attending, Camp Taylor, a camp for children with heart disease. My sister used to have major heart problems when she was very young. Praise God, only one major open-heart surgery took care of all the problems and she is now very healthy. The camp is LOADS of fun though. Horseback riding, swimming, parties, dances, contests, singing, rock climbing, ropes courses, ice creams, movies, theme parks......

It is to be confessed that poetry and I are as wide apart as me dressing in color coordinated clothes. Most of poetry goes way over my head. I simply can't grasp the mechanics of it. So my lips actually moved while I was reading this. Maybe it helped becuase I actually think i understand this stanza. Excellent first try. But remember--not an expert--just a fan.

ok, i realy liked this poem, you can tell you didnt just sit down and say i have to write a poem, your emotions flowed and the words came to you in a natrual sucsession so that they flow together like a winding river and before you know it your poem is over and its just so smooth you have to go thru the ride again and again to get the depth of it...but im not an expert im just a 15y.o. girl trying to be a poet. but i think it is realy good

Andave, I like your poem! It's thoughtful and deep! Sorry you are sick. Yes, I get tired of people too - all the time. I hope you have a pleasant vacation - Dr. Faustus is one of my favorite, all-time plays, btw. Brilliant. - C
