day in a life

advice from an uneducated mom

Rate this Entry
I keep getting ideas for books or stories to write and I start them all but I never see them through. I thought about writing a story about a single mom and raising kids and all, this being a job you don't go to school to study and prepare for it just happens and you have to wing it. People give you advice left and right about how to handle the pregnancy and the new baby, teething and diapers and food and illnesses and just about everything that goes on, but in the end you can't use any or at most a few of the advice you get. how people tried to scare me into getting rid of my dog because he was going to eat my baby... right! what is wrong with people, my dog is my baby too and I couldn't imagine getting rid of him. and everything they said about sleep and food, arrgg I get so annoyed thinking about it now cause everybody thinks they know better just because they had a kid before I did. Now I even stop myself trying to do the same thing at times, but most of the times I'm looking for someone who is just as confused as I am.

you don't go to school for three years to get ready for this job but you do with most other professions, and this job is way more important. If you screw up in your day job you can usually fix it or do your best to at least, but if you screw up your kid, that's a different issue all together and can't be fixed or pushed under the rug. That is my biggest fear, that I'll do something and ruin my sons childhood or be the reason he will have some mental issues or something.

that's my story, a single mom who has no idea what she's doing but knows she's doing the best she can.

Well, you are educated, now Helga, you've been educated in the school of life. And your little boy seems happy, and the two of you seem happy together, so it turned out all right.

There is a story there if you care to carve it out.

Oh being a mom is the most important job in the world. You are the glue that holds society together. And being a single mom is as heroic as any dangerous occupation.

Ditto! Well, I don't have a baby, but it annoys even me when I'm in the grocery store with a pregnant friend/friend with a baby, and it seems to give every random stranger out there license to criticize them and give them advice...?
