what i find interesting is that it was written shortly after Darwins theory came about and you will notice that the book has to do alot with Freud as with darwin

I was surprised not to find any reviews that included the fact that the book was written at the same time as Freud was creating theories about the human mind. Freud hypothesized that each mind was made up of an id, ego and superego. These three parts are what Stevenson explored in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Hyde being the id in a sense. He represented a more primitive, unreasonable and out of control personality. Jekyll was the ego which held control over bodily responses. However, as the ego slowly lost control to the id, Jekyll was still aware and responsive to this because of his superego, which continued to observe the ego and id behaviour. Hyde could not be trusted to survive alone without being attached to the ego anymore. Jekyll (ego and superego) took care of the id and saved society. If you look at the story as a parallel to freudian theory, then you would be able to see that it is not a tale about exploring the POSSIBILITY of good vs. evil....you will see that it is the REALITY that everyone has good and evil within them.
