I'm rather selective... I don't like classical music, i can't manage to understand it but well, tastes are varied...oh and I can't stand boybands and all such...
I love rock music, especially if dark and depressive... And i like electronic tunes and i'm a big fan of the music of the 80s.
And here goes my list of favourites:

DEPECHE MODE (in capital letters cos it's my very favourite ;))
The Cure
Placebo
R.E.M.
The Smiths
Joy Division
Garbage

i cant think of any others at the moment...

I like golden oldies--'50s, '60s and '70s music--especially the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, Simon and Garfunkel, and Crosby Stills Nash and Young. I also like jazz (Louis Armstrong especially) and ragtime. I enjoy classical music; I don't really have any favorite composers, except perhaps Vivaldi. As for modern music, styles are so mixed that I can't say I like any one in particular. Some artists that I like to listen to are Natalie Merchant, Sister Hazel, Sixpence None the Richer, Kate Rusby, Gillian Welch, Norah Jones, and Cake. Oh, and I also like '40s singers such as Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, etc.

I like everything except for top 40 pop ****e, and country music.
I especially like alternative rock:
Nirvana
Jimi Hendrix
Queens of the Stone Age
Rage Against the Machine
The White Stripes
Red Hot Chili Peppers...to name only a few. I've got a lot of bands I love, but those are the ones prominent in my album collection.
And it's good to see some Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and other 60s/70s metal fans here. I always say that I missed my intended generation.

Although I'll occasionally find a vocalist I like to listen to now and then, I'm basically a classical listener. Favorite composers, not quite in order, perhaps:

Mozart
Brahms
Dvorak
Beethoven
Wagner (without the words, preferably)
Bach
(Hi, Jay - I don't know much about Smetana, but I love "Ma Vlast"!)
Vivaldi

I'm really into Ella Fitzgerald right now...most people think I'm nuts. Her voice is just so incredibly pure, unlike most artists today. She actually had pure, unadulterated talent. I also like:

System of a Down
Harry Connick Jr.
Josh Groban
Jeremy Camp (Christian singer)
Tim McGraw
The Beatles
Elton John

I have yet to find a genre of music that I don't like at least a little bit of! (Except extremely weird stuff, like polka or mexican rap :D hehe)

My tastes are fairly eclectic. I was raised on Classical and Jazz, I've done some opera and large choral works, I play saxophone in a ska band, and I'm learning electric guitar.

In terms of listening, I'm mostly into alternative. Sorta, metal that doesn't make the radio. My favourite bands are I Mother Earth (Alatar, if you like King Crimson you should check these guys out), Tool, and Kyuss.

It's good to get to know music like Ella Fitzgerald...even (and probably better) if people call you nuts! (not that im into Ella stuff but it must be very good quality stuff, from what i know)... and to get to know various things, not only rock and 'young' stuff.

And sorry but reading your post i couldn't help imagining Ella Fitzgerald performing System Of A Down songs :D :D :D

yeah ella fitzgerald and 80s music
i'm into tori amos, radiohead, no doubt (not so much their newer stuff though), sarah slean, the police....
the list goes on. :)
i can't stand most country (although i do like the dixie chicks)
and i don't really like extremely "top 40 pop" music like britney spears or nsync or those prefab bands.
its about talent and vision, man. :D

Lol...Ella doing System of a Down? I think that'd be a little bit frightening... :D And by the way, redrum, if it's all about talent and vision, I completely understand why you don't like artists like Britney Spears...because she has nothing but a recording studio with very advanced sound techniques to back her up.
