I'm pretty sure that D'Artagnan was only commissioned into the musketeers once, but I might be wrong, as it has been quite a while since I have read the book, but anyway, here's an approximate chronology of him and the musketeers:

1) He gets sent to Paris with a letter recommending him to the musketeers.
2) The Man of Meung steals it from him.
3) He gets accepted into the guardsmen.
4) The rest of the book happens.
5) He gets commisioned into the musketeers.

Just trying to be helpful.

If you plan on reading all the musketeer books, be prepared. They come to awful ends, believe me. I won't tell you how they die, (they're much older, of course) but it's horrible! You'd almost think Dumas had something against his own characters and in revenge decided to give them all terrible deaths.

This was a great book. After reading it I decided I wanted to read all of Dumas' musketeer novels. Did people notice that D'Artagnan was granted commission into the Musketeers twice? I wonder if this book had so many plot twists and turns that even Dumas lost track.
