I agree with konnie's comment, I just want to add that 1984 may be inspired, too, in the dictatorial government that ruled spain after Spanish Civil War. Orwell actually fought in this war, and has a book about my region (catalunya). All that I have learnt about Franco's government and Franco's party (La Falange) has a lot in common with Orwell's ingsoc. Just my comment to this really frightening book that made me think a lot about society and governements.

This book has alot in common with the holocaust. Instead of killing the people who disobeyed the obsurd laws in 1984 they put them in rehabilatation rooms and tortured them to love big brother. In both of the situations the people were enslaved by the goverment. Being watched and made to suffer through the shortage of food. Isn't this a coinscidence?
