George Orwell's 1984 was actually an assessment of events in 1948 when the "Cold War" changed all the enemies. The Soveits, America's gallent allies during W W II, became the Gremlins in the Kremlin. The wonderful Chinese now became the new Yellow Peril replaceing the Japanese who were now on the side of the good guys. The wicked Germans became part of the the NATO alliance. The wicked Italians now became good guys. Orwell was writing about what had happened as much as the future. Sadly the American people foolishly accepted all this without too much question. The fact that "defense budgets" are the only reason we do not have another Great Depression fits the dynamics of the 1984 very well. 1984 should be required reading for any American who values his individual liberty. The question is how many Americans are true Americans in that they value their Constitution and Bill of Rights. The answer is probably not too many. However, a few determined individuals can be effective if they intelligently make their case.
