I have posted similar comments before without their getting past the administrator/censor; makes me wonder at the irony.<br><br>However ... 1984 is not prophecy and was not intended as prophecy. Its original title was 1948; Orwell was partly describing and partly mocking the world in which he lived and worked, and a war fought for freedoms that had already been lost at home.<br><br>Anthony Burgess's book 1985 is a good reference work for those interested in 1984, as it discusses many of the influences on Orwell's work, including Zamyatin's novel We. Burgess actually does try predicting the future in the second half of 1985, but got it wrong.<br><br>I share many of the views of those who have posted concerns about personal freedom and government control, but please let's stop the self-pitying bleating and the misplaced hero-worship. Orwell would laugh at this stuff if he were able to read it.
