Let's cut to the chase. Many of these posters are using 1984 as an emblem of their fear and hate of George Bush. It's pseudo-philosophical. It just seems to "click" emotionally with these people because they are already mired in fear and hatred of their opposition, and they are willing to dumb down the elaborate meanings of 1984 into one convenient, resonant package they can throw around without much effort. 1984 wasn't intended as an indictment on just any organized system of power.<br><br>I love the Newspeak of 1984. This was the material that Orwell just reveled in. His demonstration that language powerfully limits or expands the horizon of people's thoughts gave me a huge sense of pride in the beauty of English-- and all the other great, richly cultured languages, honestly-- after another reading of this text.
