I just finished reading 1984 and find it to be a representation of human nature as well as a political critique. It is human nature to give in to temptation, and when placed in situations of extreme torture, we will sacrifice those we love to save ourselves. It is a sad, and rather distressing truth to our world. Selfishness in times like these is present in society, whether or not justified.
