Disappointed Poster
05-24-2005, 06:07 PM
Having just discovered this site, I was thrilled to be able to re-read 1984 without having to remember to pick up a new copy of the book next time I was at Barnes and Noble.

Sadly, the majority of the comments posted in this area below this fantastic work of literary art are idiotic and rambling. Our world today, both literally and figuratively, have only vague comparisons to the horror world described in the novel. Our posters instead attempt to use this forum to toss around their own half-baked political views and amusing conspiracy theories, all the while babbling about how we should all realize just how much our own Real World is so similiar to Orwell's 1984 world, and how we should presumably take action.

Each poster is indulging themselves in a masturabotry fantasy by thinking that the real world they are surrounded by is even remotely like the extremes that surrounds the characters of 1984. Sure, it's very poetic and romantic and self-indulgent to think that our world is degrading at a rate which will eventually plunge all of humanity into Orwell's nightmare of 1984, but it does not take an extreme stretch of intellect to realize that a society described in this book cannot exist.

^How do we have telescreens?
Are you referring to televisions?

I agree with you, dissapointed poster, we think that our world is bad, however, we cannot even comprehend what it was like in the novel. Every right we have today as humans would be taken away from us! I also believe that it would take quite a while for the people of today to adjust to such a dramatic change in their lives. Too many people are too arrogant and complacent with how they live now, that they wouldnt take to change very well at all
