1984 is a novel which really makes you think; and not only during the process of reading it, but also afterwards. The most remarkable idea to me is the big Winston's defeat. Once they are coming into the Brotherhood so they accept as possible if needed many cruel acts in the name of the Brotherhood but one; keeping apart from Julia; it's the only thing they are not willing to. Later, when it gets to the rats torture; the most disgusting thing to be done to him, in despair, Winston suggests the torture is done to her, Julia, and not him. From my humble opinion, this is the climax to the depiction of the human nature; in common events we are able to care about the rest; but when it comes to limit situations when in extreme despair, we only care for ourselves; no matter whatever happens to the rest; what is essential is to save ourselves and our mates... come what may...
