The story of 1984 is in another light, [I believe in the light Orwell was trying to secure] incredibly uplifting. The message, is that even within a complete oligarchical tryanny, the human being can resist, can refuse, re-think, re-order, re-design, re-invent and re-live. There will never be a way to make a human being capable of fully denying it's hard-wired design. Most certainly, if there becomes a way- that being, will NOT be completely human. Only mechanical and/or biological intervention would possibly create an environment for completely disarming the human condition...

"I really can't understand anyone that would read it by themselves for enjoyment."

Perhaps you should try it! I have... and can't begin to tell you how deeply effectual an experience it has been.

Winston knew of this experience, as well....

[1984: Page 150- Midway down the page]

"Winston stopped reading, cheifly in order to appreciate the fact that he was reading, in comfort and safety. He was alone: no telescreen, no ear to the keyhole, no nervous impulse to glance over his shoulder or cover the page with his hand. The sweet summer air played against his cheek. From somewhere far away there floated the faint shouts of children: in the room itself there was no sound except the insect voice of the clock. He settled deeper into the arm chair and put his feet up on the fender. It was bliss, it was eternity..."

This offers nothing if you don't look at in the light of discussion. I really can't understand anyone that would read it by themselves for enjoyment. George Orwell's often times simplistic righting style is quite welcomed, however, in the more than usual confusing topic of totalitarianism, and it's effects on individualism. I found the book hard to because of it's bleak and pessimistic look at Winston's life. Everything just went downhill. I don't think I would have read it all if I didn't have to. So if you don't want to discuss it, and you're looking for a more upbeat look on life then stay clear of 1984.
