We have just finished reading 1984 in our English 12 class. Several students in my class called it "boring", but I totally disagree. I was mesmerized by Orwell's writing. It's an absolutely great book, one that provokes thought, which many books today fail to do. I felt that the ending was a good one. It was inevitable. O'Brien said Winston would die, and he didn't lie. Great book all around. Animal Farm was awesome too.
