I read this novel a few times back in junior high, along with Bradburryes'Ferienheight 451', Huxleys' 'Brave New World' and Rands' 'Antham'. It is interesting to note the things that have come to pass: The constant surveillance we have today ( from 1984), genetic cloning, test tube babies and happy drugs (Brave New World). etc. World history is full of examples of corrupt and/or totalitarian rule over the masses. It is a part of human nature to adapt and sometimes even grow to take pride in the status quo, if it is all you know and all around you are accepting it. Right now, (as in the past) religion seems to be a dominating factor in the conflicts that are occuring. Jewish and Muslim strife over the Gaza strip is a cause for concern right now, with terrorism drawing all nations attention. This is something that has great reprocutions for the future. If you want to read some really scary stuff, check out a really great book called the BIBLE. The predictions for the future in this book range from a ONE WORLD GOVT (overseen by a brilliant, charismatic leader, false-prophet healer, who rises from the middle-east (Anti-christ).. and a ONE WORLD MONETARY SYSTEM (the mark of the beast) which would be like a microchip credit card/social security/ ID card implanted in the forehead or right hand of everyone in the world, so that they could easily be identified and purchase things. Refusal to get this implanted would mean execution, yet getting this implanted would mean your soul is lost to the false prophit. Now, this book was written way before the 1930's and 40's. These are predictions for the future which I could easily see coming to pass in the future. Also, an interesting book I read recently is called ' The Bible Code'
