I think you've written a great 1984 comment, especially the link with the United States today is wonderful. Governments have always been trying to control their citizens. The way in witch Big Brother is described reminds the reader of the former Soviet-leader Josef Stalin.

that was a shocking spelling of which by the last replying person. had to be said sorry - I know Newspeak will cut down words but lets hopes the americans will learn to spell them should it happen heh! James
Interesting! Read "The Russians" by Hendrick Smith and then tell me who Orwell was talking about.
LOL I love the fact that "James" corrects the spelling of "which" and then proceeds into a paragraph so garbled it would only make sense in Newspeak. Wow James before you correct like that check your own spelling!

Some say that Orwell was writing about the governements of Hitler and the Soviet Union. But in what ways was he writing about his government? Does it apply to most governments that exist today? It is arguable how much we resemble Oceania, but clearly we have all of the elements at play: propaganda (look at the slogan-strewn backgrounds of any George W. Bush Presidential address), thought police (e.g., FBI investigations of "unpatriotic" art exhibits), surveillance (cellphone monitoring, security cameras), civilian spies (the whitehouse's plan to have citizens spy on each other), etc.
