I think that this comment says a lot. I strongly agree with it. After reading this book in my 7th grade challenge class i got the same message. People in the world today, even though they try not to, are custom to listen to mostly whatever they hear. Now this is just like Big Brother and the people of Oceania. THough many of them do not want to they are a custom too.
Thank you for your time,
This is a much too pessimistic outlook on America. The broadcast news channels are identical to each other because of ignorance and laziness, not because they're being fed a line by Big Brother.

As far a WalMart & McDonald's, you don't have to frequent either of them if you don't want to.

ABC and NBC aren't fed a line from the government. They have their own agenda... they seriously want to turn America into a socialist country... something common among Democrats.

I think you're selling the human race short. We're not all sheep! we've rebelled before on what we think is wrong, like the revolutionary war, the break up of the soviet union etc!

the old saying the greatest trick the devil ever pulled off was making us believe he doesnt exist is how one can read this work and not realize it has become a reality. as much as i would agree that china is a present day oceania, this must be a present day euroasia. the question i asked myself after reading orwell was what is feedom? can one say the usa is a free nation as orwell may well as defined the term, i think not. for example, watch the nightly news broadcast from each of the 'big three' and tell me where each is different and willing to take on the most pressing issues of the day? each has stories straight from the same 'cookie-cutter' mold and speaking of the same issues, and it is due to the 'corporitazation' of america in all its glory. state run televeision in the former soviet union never had it so good, the people knew it was a load of propaganda disguised as objecitve, the state knew it was propaganda disguised as objective, and any credibilty it may have had was corrupted by that influence. the same is true today in this country yet corruption is disguised as objectivity in all the mass media outlets since they are all owned and operated by conglomerates according to the bottom line. why should NBC shed light on disney's wrongdoings when ABC will shed light on GE's wrong doings? this is long and most likely made no sense since so few 'know' the facts operating in the world today. my answer to the presiouly stated question is we arent free when walmart and mcdonalds rule the world, free to do as they wish with nothing more than a smile from the politicians 'in charge'. we collectively are winston at the end, ignorant, happily accpeting the bullet and finally coming to love Big Brother-what other choice to the sheep have?
