Orwell based his 1984 on a Russian inter-war period novel by Zamiatin called We. If you want a secondary source you should use We or another great distopian work called Brave New World by Huxley. Happy reading....

Also, Orwell's own Coming Up For Air provides a useful insight (towards the end, especially) into why Orwell wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four. Homage to Catalonia does too, showing his experience with Stalinists like those who perverted the fiction revolution that brought the world of the novel to being.

I just finished reading this book for a paper I have to do for my AP class. It's a little confusing, and boring, but once you really look at it and analyze it, you can see the dangers of hate and a totalitarian government. Does anybody know any good sites that could serve as a secondary source for my paper?
