In the stunned heat of
a day in July
a woman is thinking this:
Hotel rooms make me feel
20% more beautiful

leaning from the fifth-floor window
vodka at elbow
she watches the evening
rob the yellow from this day

she checked in 2 days ago
her breathing has changed
from panicky
to shallow, to normal

across the highway a heron
standing on one leg
is lost in thought
letting the world go by
as it must

she carries the vodka to bed
lifts the glass and drinks
listening to the electric buzz of insects
tires humming over concrete
planes moving through time zones

it is the time to kill time
lying back on the bed
she lights one up

the stillness of a hotel painting
looks placidly her way
sensing the evening shadows
lengthening across the room.

Hotel rooms make her feel 20% more beautiful
she is leaning from the fifth-floor window half in
half out -

she has been here 2 days
her breathing has changed
from panicky
to shallow
to normal,

a glass of vodka ices at her elbow
her doll-black eyes study a blue heron
across the highway
alone standing on one leg
lost in thought at the edge of the water

her mouth has a fixed open expression
that seems either terribly old
or childlike

she carries the vodka to bed
lifts the glass and drinks
as the light cuts through dusty curtains
the interstate swooshes by outside

It is the time to kill time.Loved this poem, Tony. What an ending line, awesome!

thanks Kizza. Wasn't sure how to put that statement into a poem
