If you're one of the old-timers among NitLetters you might vaguely recall this thread (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?58020-Escaping-quot-The-Surround-of-Force-quot-How-the-Arts-and-Humanities-Can-Defeat-Poverty&highlight=Escaping%20Surround%20Force) from way back in 2010:
Earlier today, while doing some online research for another thread, I came across this (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/03/us/earl-shorris-who-fought-poverty-with-knowledge-dies-at-75.html):
Earl Shorris, the educator who created the inventive humanities course for poor people, apparently passed away five and a haf years ago. I am sorry to read this, so long after the fact. On the other hand, what a life he must have led! Earl Shorris's exemplifies a purpose to which all of us should aspire: to make a difference during the short time we occupy this world.
