Another Year's Snow

We had hardly noticed, scarcely known
The virgin frost, the seraph's breath,
The snow sparks scattering like fragmented bone,
Bleached immaculate, falling fresh
From purity, like Lucifer tumbling down
To frozen Eden's broken fields, and down and down
to death.
This petulance, this churlish cold, this sea
Of white waves swept upon our black and fertile earth:
It crept on us. It left us harsh and hard and free
As snowbirds singing in a twigged and tiny berth,
Against the canting wind; while in our sheltered lee
We dare behold what we've become and still
find you and me.
