The plain moon faced girl behind the shop counter looked at her watch. Ten minutes to closing time, a bit early but there hadn’t been a customer for the last half hour. She opened the till to cash up when the street door opened.
Damn.
A thin pimply faced youth looked vaguely around then nervously came over to the counter.
“H-h have you got any Valentine cards?” He stuttered.
“Over there” she pointed to a rack of shelves. “Second one down, and please hurry, its closing time”
He returned with a card and its pink envelope and laid them on the counter.
“Only one; what about the rest of your girl friends?” she asked sarcastically.
“Oh, I h-haven’t got a girl friend”
“I see, you haven’t got a girl friend but you are buying a Valentine card”
He grinned sheepishly “Well you see all my mates’ h-hand round their cards for a laugh and I don’t want to look stupid”
She shook her head. “Ah, now that’s really sad”
She opened the card and read the verse.
Be my specially valentine
Let our pounding hearts entwine
I send this card for to say
I will love you forever and a day.
“I picked it cos it’s got a nice poem”
“Really?” She smiled, picked up a pen and wrote ‘Guess who’ and six kisses.
“There, now you have a real girlfriend”
“Wow, but I d-don’t even know your name”
“It’s Maureen, and yours”?
“Norman”
“Norman, yes I might have guessed”
“You’re lovely Maureen”
“No, I’m not lovely”
“Well, nearly lovely”
“Come on, you can buy me a burger, McDonald’s is still open”

“God, that was hard work”
“Don’t take the Lord’s name in vain Cupid”
“It’s all right for you Archangel, I’ve just broke two good arrows on those nerds and I’m knackered. I hate Valentine’s Day, twenty four hours of work with no overtime pay”
“And it’s not over yet little one; all the Agony Aunt’s customers are in urgent need of your archery skills”
“Oh leave it out AA, there’s so bloody many of them and my quiver is empty”
“No worries little one, the good Lord will provide”.
