Harriet Beecher Stowe's "classic" is not only a sentimental propaganda piece illustrating the abolitionists' underlying Christian evangelist beliefs. It is also an example of the kinds of cruelties towards animals as well as African Americans that motivated many abolitionists and women's suffragettes to promote animal welfare reforms, beginning in the 1870's.
