Help needed finding title of short story

Dear Readers,
Can anyone recall a short story about a man I think is called George who decides one day not to get out of bed ever again. This was read to us in English Language GCSE in 1976 and am desperate to find out more details. It has been plagueing me ever since. Thank you. Frances.

I am also trying to figure out the title of a short story I read in college. We read the story and then watched the corresponding film, which I (apparently erroneously) thought starred Elizabeth Banks and Maggie Smith.

The story is about a college literature professor who asks one of her star pupils to meet her during her office hours. The professor doesn't know what this student looked like, and iss surprised to discover it is someone whom the professor believed is a bit daft (the student always ended her sentences with an upward lilt, like she was always asking a question).

They become friends and the professor conveys her ideology that a story no longer belongs to the author once they've spoken it aloud. She eventually tells her student an intimate and personal story that she has held onto for a very long time, and her student then takes her story, writes a book, and becomes famous, believing that her professor had "given" the story to her by telling it.

It's driving me crazy not knowing what it was called, and I've searched every combination of words on Google with no success. Does anyone know what this is?
