Something rare might have happened with Carver's legacy. By a consensus of critics he seems to have been issued a pass to the Hall of the Greats while still living. This is even more rare for an author who died fairly young.
Only barely and fleetingly did Carver pretend to be anything other than a short story writer. Almost all his effort went there. It paid off in terms of critical success. In his collection there are stories that will stick to my ribs as long as I have any. There are images that will not go away, such as a one armed man eating squid at a train stop.
The collected work is not massive. At the moment it stands pretty tall and secure. Will this always be the case?
