I've always preferred "hero takes a journey" stories.
Left my home in Norfolk Virginia
California on my mind
Straddled that Greyhound,
and rode in into Raleigh and on across Caroline
I like the ending. It's got a nostalgic flavor. He finally makes it to Los Angeles and calls back home to Norfolk. He uses the old Ma Bell telephone exchange system, and says to the operator:
"Los Angeles, give me Norfolk Virginia, Tidewater 4 - 10 - Oh - 9"

Here's Chuck Berry's 1959 song "Back in the USA" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23y2Cz40zs4
There's no greater compliment than to be parodied as the Beatles did with "Back in the USSR".
