I also was asked to read this novel for AP English, and I, as a girl, am very touchy feely. However, I was not impressed with the novel to say the least. Infact I found it to be a waste of time, as there are many other literary works recomended by the AP examiners that I am sure have a much higher interest response for our age group. And they wouldn't recomend those books if they lacked content.

Wuthering Heights is wonderful. I strongly recommend it to anyone wanting a good read (when read aloud, it sounds so perfect, almost like Shakespeare), and although it is a love story, so much angst and sadness trap the reader into feelings of hate for the once loved Heathcliff, all the way up to the settling, redeemable ending. It is not pretty. Some of it is downright maddening to read, not because of the exquisite diction, but the sheer feelings for the characters. I sort of relate it to a somewhat shady version of Romeo and Juliet, except that Romeo didn't kill himself, he drove his dispair onto others. This is Emily Bronte's only real novel, from what I know, and I like it much better than any of her sister's work.

And, to the person relating this to Moulin Rouge, it didn't have Truth or Freedom, the whole point is that Cathy married for status when she should have for love. And they didn't overcome any obstacles, they let them get in their way.
