View Full Version : Writing talent and risk-taking

Many good writers (it seems to me) are adventurous risk-takers. Perhaps adrenaline fuels their creativity. Hemmingway went big-game hunting. Aeschylus fought the Persians at Marathon. Orwell fought against the rebels in the Spanish Civil War.

Perhaps I'm a timid sort, and don't want to risk my life quite so dramatically. However, I've compiled a list of risky behaviors that I AM committed to attempting, and I hope, by doing so, to improve my writing by living life on the edge, the place of definitions:

1) Drink tap water.
2) Drink coffee after 7:00 pm.
3) Occasionally ride my bicycle without wearing a helmet.
4) Refrain from daily flossing.
5) Change the oil in my car every 5000 miles instead of every 3000.
6) Get a sun tan.
7) Eat unorganic fruits and vegetables.
8) Don't get a flu shot.
9) Talk on my cell phone while driving.
10) Don't change the batteries in my smoke alarm.

If this doesn't get the ol' adrenaline pumping, nothing will.

There are places I would not want to drink the tap water.

Very few people bother calling me so I don't have to worry about talking on the phone while driving, however, I do have the phone connected to the media system in the car, so if I did get a call, it would go over the car's speakers. Unless I forget the phone at home.

There are smoke alarms that don't need batteries or when they break, you have to buy new ones. I used to change the batteries in the older style smoke alarms when they started making that annoying beeping sound.

I drink coffee at all hours of the day or night.

I never wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.

I'll eat any fruits or vegetables, organic or inorganic.

At my age, my dentist has given up trying to convince me to floss.

I don't believe in flu shots. Just another way to get me medicated.

My wife gets the oil changed so I have no clue when it is done. I do change the furnace filter and use the 3-month rated filters on sale at Costco, but change them every 4-months since I figure if they say I should change them every 3 months they can probably last another month. However, I do have an alarm on my phone to remind me to change them or they would never be changed.

I eat food in the refrigerator that has gone past its use-by date or eat-by date.

I don't hunt any game whether big or small. I figure I have enough karma built up against me already.

I avoid politics. This keeps my blood pressure normal. I probably would not be caught fighting either for or against anyone in the Spanish Civil War.

I wonder if the French Foreign Legion still takes recruits. Inspiration for a 'Beau Geste" sequel?

Hack into a certain individual's Tweet Account and start being polite and nice to everyone!

Long term retirement care with an ex carnival dancer in Rio.

Commit all the old sins in the newest kind of ways.

Covet my neighbours ox.

Oh the list is endless.

Some items of this very risky list:
1-I drink tap water (boiled)
2-I prefer tea to coffee at all times!
3-Never learnt to ride a bicycle.
4- Now here lies the great danger! Turned into an obssessive flosser after noticing that otherwise I would enrich my dentist.
5 and 9-No car, no active cell phone!
6-It is raining.
7- If I eat them at all, certainly unorganic.
8-Flu shots have proven protective. I prefer them to the flus.
10-Smoke alarm-Whatever are talking about?
