When I was about 10 years old, I would often wake at night to the sound of whispers. The voices were never distinguishable but they were insistent. When I didn't respond to the voices, they became louder and louder until it seemed they were coming from inside my head. I was always too afraid to open my eyes and often hid beneath the duvet. When I turned 12 they stopped and I forgot about them. That is until a couple of weeks ago. I was dozing on my couch, in front of the TV when I heard a soft whisper. I turned to my 10 year old daughter and ask what she said. "I didn't say anything daddy" she replied with a strange look on her face, coming out of her own sleep at the sound of my voice. I must have imagined it being half asleep. I dozed back off with my daughter.
I woke up to the sound of quiet footsteps behind me and indistinguishable whispering. I spun around, expecting to see my daughter there… nothing. I looked around and my daughter was stood in the doorway that connects the living room to the kitchen. Her face was pale and her eyes were wide and filled with fear. "Whats wrong?" I asked her. She pointed to a spot behind me. Her mouth opened and closed a couple of times. She swallowed hard before speaking. "That lady…" She said. "She whispers in my ear at night and wakes me up." She was trembling now, barely able to stand. I spun back around and still couldn't see anything. All of a sudden, the whispering from my childhood came crashing back from the depths of my memory. I whipped my head back to my daughter who was now sobbing into her hands now covering her face. My terror was over, hers was just beginning… and there was nothing either of us could do…
