Can anybody tell me which of Orwell's novels are best to read after Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four? Where should I go next?

The essays are good, I recommend Shooting an Elephant and can socialists be happy.

His other novels are of little importance. If you want to understand how he came to write 1984 and Animal Farm I suggest Homage to Catalonia, and of course the essays and journalism. Homage though is of particular merit because we can see Orwell getting real world experience of communists attempting to change the past.

anyway, i just thought of another book while reading your posting. it's supposed to be one of orwell's main influences (i myself haven't read it though, it's pretty hard to find here) - 'we' by yevgenii zamyatin. anybody capable of giving any comments on it?

Keep the Aspidistra Flying is a humorous look at anti-captialism, as the main character goes through the process of defining for himself how political creeds are rationalisations of emotional problems. Sardonic, witty and dry.


Homage to Catalonia a wonderful account of his service as miltitiaman in Spanish Civil War. If you're into history... :D

I only read the essay in question on TLN(The Literature Network) and it is titled as "Can Socialists Be Happy?" http://www.online-literature.com/orwell/895/ . If that is in error you may want to bring it up to the admin.

"We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin. I have not read it but, I have been trying to get the admin to add this book to the page he simply won't respond though.....I'm just not good enough /cry. http://www.online-literature.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=618

There is a great four-volume set of his essays and journalism edited by Sonia Orwell and another collaborator, I don't remember the name. Very insightful pieces that give one a good picture of his time and many questions about its relationship to the present age.
