i have wonderful memories of my recent close reading of the novel as i discussed it with undergraduate students. Apart from the traditional objective analysis of the novel reflecting the nature of Nature and human nature ! it is an intense study of a spiritually alive woman writer seeking meaning despite the binds of her time. Emily i think of as a movement from Catherine Earnshaw Linton and Heathcliff ,finally finding meaning in life through the freedom and love experienced by Catherine Linton Earnshaw. Each character a symbol of all that existed in the writer as she meandered her way through the quiet and lonely life in her father's parish.

i would particularly focus on the choice made by the younger Catherine who recognises that life to be lived has to be taken as it comes and moulded as also one moulds oneself to it. This i believe is the essential message of the novel so essential to our troubled times. After all i think that we as a human world have yet to come into the understanding of Love as the essence of all things.
