In no particular order:

I am thankful that, despite the bungling of my youth, I somehow ended up with my good and beloved wife, and that we are growing old together.

I am thankful I still have faith in God, who sustains me in spite of myself.

I am thankful my old father is still with me.

I am thankful to be a free man in a free society.

I'm thankful 17 year olds can't vote. :)

I'm thankful for the light of a single candle.

I had to look this up. It is on 24 November, that's tomorrow. I didn't know that in the US people list the things they are thankful for. Nice custom.

So what are you thankful for, DW?

Quite a lot: my home in Sweden, my wife and my children. Glad I learned Hungarian at home as a child without even trying. Glad for my unusual education at Leicester University (Anthony Giddens and Norbert Elias) and that my aunt took me to Hungary and Czechoslovakia in the early 1950s to seek out our relatives who survived the war.

I give thanks for the love and companionship of my partner over nearly forty years, particularly in these last few years when my health has required a lot of care.

When we first lived together, same sex couples were widely not acceptable. I give thanks that in every church we have been to, we have been accepted as a couple. Would that the family was an institution as reliable.

Now as civil partners, we have all the legal benefits, obligations and protection of married couples. Although our Conservative government has introduced a new category of same sex marriage, we have no intention of taking it up as thought our life and love has been hitherto something second rate.

The son who continues to drain our pockets in need of tuition support, but he is following his Grandfather's footsteps so I don't complain too much.
