I am reading this book for school and I have only read to chapter 7, but so far I like how Douglas Adams wrote it so it says the characters back stories first, but then it goes back to the main plot of the story with Arthur and Ford.

I have a forum thread on astronomy (58 pages long at this time) under general chat, serious discussions: http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?80444-Astronomy. It is still active (I added a post this morning on the launch preparations of the James Webb Space Telescope). The thread is now just 2 years old

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is in some 6 volumes I understand. See the Wikipedia links below:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy and
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_(novel).

By posting on your thread, spacemonkey67, I will receive updates on this topic.

Is the version you are reading the whole of the multi-volume series or just one of the books? (it should say somewhere in you copy).

The only comment I have to make here is that the book does not assume that all change is s-l-ow, as the original Darwinism would have it.

By now I have read to chapter 14. I don't really like this part because this is the part of not just this book but almost every book were nothing is going on. Its a gap between the beginning and the rising action. Douglas Adams could have made something interesting happen or something funny happen but everyone is just talking.

I don't think you can be reading the book I read. Douglas Adams' strange juxtapositions and flights of fancy were on every page, if memory serves, and the book was packed with funny.

Oddly, I don't remember there being a plot. :D

I have now read up to chapter 25. One thing I like about this book is how Douglas Adams is still adding characters and more stuff to the story. It may be hard to think about at first but once you really think about it it all fits together like a puzzle. For example Slartibartfast* says that mice controlled earth and Trillian* had the last two mice on earth.

*= characters in the book

I have now finished The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Overall it was a good book. It had some funny stuff and some stuff that made me have to stop and think about for a second. There was also a couple of spots that I was confused on and I just didn't understand. But overall It was a good book and I would recommend it.

I have now started to read the second book in the series The Restaurant at the End of the Universe and have read to chapter 12. The book is very similar to the first book but also very different. For example all the characters are the same and it picks up where the first book left off. But it is a little more confusing and a little more complex.
