When I was born

1 Harry Truman was president, the

2 Korean War had not yet begun, the

3 Minumum Wage was 40 cents an hour,

4 Gasoline was 26 cents a gallon,

5 Bread cost 14 cents per loaf,

6 The Average annual salary was $3,600,

7 Landing on the moon was 20 years in our future,

8 "Computers in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons," predicted Popular Mechanics,

9 The Baby Boom was in full swing, and

10 Unjumbled, of course, desiresjab became my name.

Okay. Your turn.

I remember buying gas for 25 cents a gallon. I thought it was an outrageously expensive price and it actually was because I used a quarter with real silver in it.

Also I remember seeing cigarettes rise from 25 cents to 30 cents in the vending machine. Another outrageous price increase. I smartened up and stopped smoking.

I suppose landing on the moon, with real human beings on-board, is still a good 20 years in the future.

Do you remember the scene in The Godfather II when Batista's Havana falls and Michael gives Sal the kiss of death? That's the night I was conceived.

It was a bombers moon over London on the 4th October 1943 and the Luftwaffe were on time.

Apparently I cried a lot when born.

I'm not surprised in hindsight, when Hitler is dropping bombs on you !!

An interesting subject because the time and place of a person's birth can have far-reaching consequences.
The first sounds I can remember were those of falling bombs and artillery fire as nearby gun emplacements sought to combat German bombers seeking to destroy London's infrastructure.
Some years later, my mother told me that ' the only good German was a dead one': this, coupled with relentless media propaganda along similar lines, led me to wonder who were these terrible people who were the Devil incarnate.
Time passed and I became interested in music and found it difficult to square the greatness of German composition with their evil reputation, so I went to Germany and found they were a warm and welcoming people. I studied German history which explained a lot about the reasons for their expansionist behaviour and I learned their language and worked among them.
Even now while the Germans seeks to control Europe via the EU, I will fight to prevent it but my heart will always belong to Germany

How could it be otherwise?
