View Full Version : I don’t hang flags

I don’t hang flags from my window
For anyway, which should it be?
I’m Austrian by birth, French by necessity,
Greek by affinity, and European by conviction,
And therefore at a loss somehow.

I don’t shout louder to make sure
My truths are heard for there are none.
I hardly ever act on purpose;
things seem to happen, and I watch,
Make mental notes, then pour them out
In prose and poetry that no one needs
Because these two don’t come
With handy algorithms.

I don’t have money yet I’m rich.
I have a boyfriend, lover and companion,
All three in one, a real bargain.
I have my throne where I command my poops
And pick my nose unseen.
I have my words, in German, French and English,
And I dearly love them even if they sometimes
Turn out to be wily.

I have a job, a home, six pairs of jeans,
Two pairs of sneakers and some T-shirts.
I have my will, my mind, my love, my laughter.
I guess I am as free as one can be
In our world of mutual dependencies.

You see? I don’t have much, I am not much.
Call me a loser or a nutter, call me
Anything you like—I will just shrug.
If things get tough, I’m still a poet,
And I will always have the moon to howl to…

Having the moon to howl to and howling to it are probably all one needs. Having more than six pairs of jeans does seem like too many. Nice poem.

Huh! 6 pairs of jeans if you count my 3 pairs of shorts… and my mom would say "Why do you always buy jeans and never some decent trousers?" Thanks for reading & commenting :-)
