Hi!

Iīve just come up with an idea for my masterīs thesis in which Iīd like to focus on the literary representation of depression. Iīd like to use Sylvia Plathīs "The Bell Jar" but I think that the work could be more interesting if I analysed the representation of male depression too, which is not presented so frequently in literary works. Do you maybe know some interesting books concerning this topic? Since the female character has suicidal thoughts, the more depressed a man is, the better ;P The book must be written by an American author and it would be wonderful if it was published in 1960s, (however, the latter requirement is not a must).

Thank you a lot in advance for your kind help!

Why would you treat Plath's work in your thesis??? Her works are period pieces. Depressed figures abound in literature from the melancholy Dane (Hamlet) to Dostoevsky's novels like Brothers Karamasov (the character Ivan for instance). Just at the top of my head.
