“Life is what you make of it. Some people are luckier than others. There’s no such thing as karma, boy. Why do people get revenge? If there was a real karma they wouldn’t need to. Folks can act real good but be pure monsters when no one’s around. Watch your back. Never give them your best for free. And above all, no hang time. They’ll take you for a sucker as long as they can if you let them. Let the hat out of the bag quid pro quo. Don’t wait for anything. Git’r done smack. Don’t bargain. Believe me, if you’re tryin’ to reduce the deal they won’t come again for a second one. Business succeeds on quality, not bargains. You do your job thoroughly with high quality they’ll return over and over again. They’ll pay too. They’ll pay number one three times what they pay number two because that’s what the best is worth to them. So, be number one, supersede your competition so much they’re not even real competition anymore. Don’t take it from behind, under the table or around in the alley. You do that and you’ll be crawling with tickers in no time. The highest paying business you’ll ever get sees you eye to eye, face to face.”
I was listening to my grandfather talk on his patio at my young cousin, Louie. Gramps was always giving advice whether you liked it or not. Well, not always, but when he was on his rocking chair out on his patio, that’s the only thing he ever did.
I was inside on the couch. My grandparents lived in a deluxe trailer home in out of town upstate New York. A long creek that zig-zagged for ten miles went right through the yard so the driveway included a tiny bridge. When I was a young boy I imagined the creek was a moat and the house was a castle. But those were the old days. As of recently I don’t do much role playing but back then I’d pretend my stick was a sword and I was on an adventure.
My grandmother was at the dining room table as always, reading a book. The remainder of us were in the living room watching a movie on the satellite television. I got off the couch then went outside with my grandfather and cousin.
The light was getting dim in the late evening. A soaring sky with thin wisps of clouds sinking into a pinkish blue stretched on forever. Grandpa quit talking for a minute and all you could hear was the television set behind us inside. There was a low rumble that started below our hearing but you got the sense that it was massive. I thought there was an earthquake about to hit hard but the rumble continued fairly steady and even.
“Do you hear that?” Said Louie.
I said, “Yeah. It’s coming from below. Gotta be.”
I made my way off grampas patio and walked out into the yard. I could feel the rumble continue on but a little stronger than before. I said, “I think it’s an earthquake.”
Gramps said, “That’s a real low frequency kinda quake. They usually don’t go on like this for this long.”
I said, “Yeah, and it’s getting stronger.”
Gramps said, “Everyone outta the house! There’s a quake gonna knock the roof in, get out here!”
Everyone was out of the house quick and joined me in the yard. Grams was at the door, she said, “That’s a doozy. They never happen like that.”
Louie yelled, “Hey, look at that! In that flatland across the creek! You see it?!”
I said, “Yes. It’s the ground getting all pushed up.”
We all watched as the mound of dirt slowly grew like a molehill across the way. It must’ve been a good quarter of a mile away but the mound of dirt was large enough to see at this distance. I held my girlfriend close and she didn’t say a word.
The dirt mound grew as the soil clods rolled off, revealing the moist and rich undersoil. The ground shook harder and harder with no signs of letting up. I said, “That’s getting high. I think we need to pile into your van grampa and get on. There’s no telling what that pile is hiding under it.”
Gramps said, “You know, I think you’re right. Whatever this thing is it can’t be anything we want to be all too close to.” He smacked his hands together hard to get everyone’s attention and said loudly, “Alright family, let’s all get in grams an’ gramps van and we’ll get outta here in case something crazy happens. C’mon let’s go.” He smacked his hands together again.
Everyone did as told and there were ten of us all crammed in there. The rumble was getting louder and louder faster than before. Grampa got out onto the secluded creek road and we all watched the mound grow until something jabbed out. An explosion of dirt filled the air around the mound with a dust cloud and the rumble softened somewhat.
Glowing red eyes of a massive beast shone through the dust cloud right at us. It was covered in scales like a reptile and must’ve stood at least a dozen stories high at first sight. It didn’t have a snout, it didn’t have a mouth, only huge glowing red eyes and was a freakishly misshapen creature unlike anything found in Earth’s nature.
We went on silently, too shocked to really say anything to each other. All of us really were thinking the same thing. Get outta here, pronto.
We were about a half a mile ahead of the monster when it finally unburied itself completely. The rumbling ended then. There was no traffic at all on the lonely creek road and it felt absolutely like a horror story come to life.
The beast looked a lot like three legs joined together. There wasn’t really a body or chest or anything except the three limbs joined at the center. Instead of one single joint like we have on our legs, this monster had two joints on each limb. What I mistook for a head wasn’t a head at all but the end of one of those limbs. Where the limbs connected there was a sort of glowing shiny thing that I could only describe as a sonar radar frequency orb. I don’t know how to describe it but it made a high register squeal that pierced right into your brain and we all covered our ears but that did little to relieve us of the sound.
The monster rolled vertically to move around appearing to do a never ending cartwheel. What left the greatest impression is how massive this beast was and how with everything it did we could feel as an aftershock in the ground reverberating from the sheer magnitude and weight of it hitting dirt with every cartwheel step it took. Then I awakened. It was all a dream.
