The Big Empty

The radio was playing softly in the background
Adding smoke to the haze in their heads
Serialism took control leaving the world a blur
Both looking at the road without seeing
Both listening to the radio without hearing
The silence cut through the air
So much on the mind but no way to convey
Her hands gripped the steering wheel as if clinging on to life
Her knuckles turning white without notice
Tears pooled in the corners of her eyes
One finally let go, carving a stream across her beautiful face
And it stayed there neglected
He sat there in the passengers seat
His body was there but his mind in the distance
Both so close to each other yet so far from reach of conscience
He stared out the window through the darkness
Allowing it to infiltrate his heavy chest
Suffocating the life and leaving nothing
Nothing but emptiness
