I spend so much time reading reddit that I think I have lost more brain cells than if I did not read at all.

Well if you read Cacian do you not feel an increase in your General Knowledge about places where you have never been , times you can never now experience, things no school teacher ever explained to you, more confidence in skills of which practice alone would have given you but limited slow development, understanding of people about whom you previously had but the sketchiest knowledge, greater variety of linguistic flexibility, better understanding of the conversation of others and frequently a feeling of satisfaction and enjoyment different from any other of your activities which could be characterized as non-essential diversions of the mind?

I think that depends very much what you read, at what time of life you read it and what kind of influence your readings have on your intellect and on your grappling with every day reality.

Yes, but it depends on what one started off with for brain and on what one reads, and there is the matter of how one reads and thinks about what is read. There are some things that one would be better off not reading.

8:11 minutes into the following video Professor Harold Bloom informs us what we will "get" by reading superior literature.

If you are constantly reading cheap pornography, my advice is to read less.

We could legislate that everyone must read one approved book every eight weeks. I predict a run on novellas. Failure to read the required quota could result in extra reading assignments from the judge. Recalcitrant cases could be sent to a reading farm for re-education.

Bloom is right on throughout the interview, except I have no opinion on whether the author of those early books of the bible was a woman.
