I am a more-patriotic-than-many American. I also am something of an Anglophile, but I very much prefer the life and principles of my own nation. I can say without the least hesitation: English literature beats the living day lights out of American. It's not even close. If it were, I'd tell you.

It's, as we LOVE TO SAY (in today's world): Diversified.

I would say that J.K. Rowling is a writer that definitely stands out with her series of eight Harry Potter books and movies and her billionaire fortune. Authors in the U.K. are much greater in a literary sense and much less trashy and drive-thru driven. They also have much wider vocabularies as American English is being constantly shortened and abridged. There are great writers on both sides though.
