You're right, you do need to have good reading comprehension to get the most out of WH. I chose WH from two books offered in english that we had to read. I assume (as i find it hard to understand) it has, like most good literature does, value in issues of the modern world. But as a young (17) contemporary reader it is very frustrating not being able to draw from WH what older, or more acommplished readers can. Arrgg schools out, so the point is maybe someone should do a transaltion of WH into mordern contexts. Which reminds me of Ten Things (Taming of the Shrew) and CLueless (Jane Eyre???? or was it based on something else?)

i agree. it is a very difficult book for a young, inexperienced reader to get the most out of. i think it is an intricate and complex story, full of interweaving characters and unbelievable genius. i belive that emily bronte and her sisters are the greatest novelists of all time

I dont understand why people find the novel complicated or hard to understand, i too am 17 yrs old and I fully understand the simplistic language and plot. Maybe you should draw yourself a family tree of the characters, fortunately for me there was one already in the front of my copy which made the story much easier to understand. I thoroughly recommend this book, it is anything but boring, it is deeply romantic, passionate, emotional and disturbing all at the same time!

I never actually heard anyone say this book was boring. I've only heard people denouncing it because they felt it was in poor taste and had no redeemable literary qualities. Of course, I disagree. I think it's quite good. I wouldn't go so far as to say that is my favorite book, but it is certainly one of the most intriguing I have every read. Emily Brontė has an excellent command of the english language, and I find it astonishing that critics of her time looked down on it and claimed it was trash and unworthy of an esteemed reader's money. Given that times have changed and that people don't have the same literary tastes, I'm not really surprised people don't like this book these days. That mainly ties back to ignorance because they couldn't understand the book. In the time Wuthering Heights was written, books were the main source of entertainment, while today people suffer from numerous other distractions, like TV and the radio. Thus, the quality of reading comprehension today is much lower than that of the average population when the book is written. Not that the change is bad, people are not more stupid; I do appreciate movies and music every bit as the next person does, but it is disturbing that people so easily jump to negative conclusions about something just because they don't understand it.
