You don't have to know anything about history to understand this book. What you need is a high British vocabulary.

To understand this book, you have to know a little bit about the struggles and revolts going on with the middle and working class of the time. The two groups, the above ground group represented the middle class and how they lived off of the underground group, representative of the working class. And how the working class would eventually rise up and revolt, it was inevitable, it is a book about how man may not be as well off as they think in the future. As you can see form the simple mindedness of the creatures.
