buffalo ny--a historic port of call via the erie canal for settlers/travelers heading westward, and a large manufacturing area early on due to hydroelectric power from the Niagara river. also, the hometown football team, the bills, lost 4 superbowls in a row!

Thanks for entering the chain, Bounty. Because of its name I suppose the town must at some distant time be known for its herds of wild buffaloes (bisons?)

purportedly there were bison in wny at one time but the city name supposedly comes from a small river that flowed through the area into lake erie, buffalo creek. its possible though the creek was named for the animal.

and one of the celtic bands whose music I have a small collection of, the Dubliners!

give their version of "molly Malone" a try (who was also from "Dublin's fair city where the girls are so pretty")

if you like the folksy/melancholy spirit---try also "the fields of athenry," and "the town I loved so well."

if you wanna try something more fun, try "the wild rover."

Ellicottville--another small village in wny, about 35ish miles northwest of me famous as a four season resort town, and probably the best skiing area in ny short of the catskills and Adirondacks.

(hang in there with me danik and i'll tell you all about my beloved state! smiles...)

Ii is a municipality in Finland with a population of around 10,000, by the Bothnian bay and at the mouth of the Ii river (Iijoki). The etymology of 'ii' is not definitively established; it is either Germanic or Sami origin. In the latter, it would mean "a place to stay overnight in".

The german version of Wikipedia states that the name Ii probably has is origin in the samian idja that means "night" or
" a sleeping place".

Joinville-One the most important cities of Santa Catarina- one of the southern States of Brazil. It is famous for its multicultural influences, specially the German one on itsarchitecture, food and dances.

Kuopio, that is where I am. With a population of 112,000, it's the eighth biggest city in Finland. Famous for the fish pastry 'kalakukko' and a major centre of medical and pharmaceutical education and research, the city is surrounded by lake Kallavesi. The name Kuopio seems to have been derived in the Middle Ages from Karelian/Russian man's name Prokopios.

a fun thing about Lancaster is there's also a Lancaster NY, a suburb of buffalo, and just north of me about 60 miles.

the Lancaster NY is pronounces "LAN-caster" while the one in PA is pronounced "lancas-ster."

being a wny'er, its hard not to go with Niagara Falls--home of course to one of the most famous waterfalls in the world.

I found this interesting because of the origin of the name:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancaster,_Lancashire
I had no idea there existed Lancashire in US too.

Ouro Preto- The name means black gold and this important site of tourism is situated in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. In the 18th century it was the center of the Brazilian Gold Rush and also of one of the first and most famous rebelion of the country against the Portuguese domination. The city is famous for its history, its more than 300 baroque churches, the works of art of the handicaped artist Aleijadinho and its student lodgings.
