In these brawls among the titans
No mortal escapes unscathed;
Whirlwinds and juggernauts aren't pretty pets . . .
We count them among the irrational forces.
So I wonder why the people cheer
As they scatter bait on open waters
Where bloodlusty sharks are known to lurk;
So I wonder why the evanjellicles,
With foam on their lips and greed in their hearts—
More fond of Mammon than Gospel values—
Discard all compassion, and pant and rage
And ring the bells to bring on perdition.
The people (shame on them!) seem more intent
On throwing wrenches into engines
Rather than repairing them.
Do they think topsy-turgitude will mend what's broken
And restore a hum to the damn-blasted whole?
They should know that giants can't see their own feet;
They should know to run away from their roars;
They should know that the ogres that butcher their neighbors
Are likely to turn on them next.
